Facts about Plitvice Lakes

National Park Plitvice Lakes is consists of 16 small and large cascading lakes on river Korana, colored in crystal blue-green emerald color located between Mala Kapela and Plješivice in Lika region.
Administratively, Plitvice lakes are located in four municipalities: Slunj, Otocac, Ogulin and Korenica.

The lakes are divided into Upper and Lower Lakes.
Upper lakes are: Prošćansko, Ciganovac, Okrugljak Batinovac, Big and Small Lake, lake Vir, Galovac, Milino, Galovac, Lake Gradinsko and Lake Kozjak.
Milanovo lake, Gavanovo, Lake Kaluderovo and Novakovic brod are the Lower Lakes.

More than three-quarters of the park, an about 14,000 hectares, is covered with forest of beech, fir, spruce and pine plain, and the rest are grasslands and meadows with spatially scattered hamlets. In park grow many rare and protected plant species such as saxifrage, yew, mountain peony.

The park area is inhabited by all kinds of native animals, here are registered 126 species of birds, and lakes are rich with stream and lake trout.

Due to its exceptional beauty, richness of flora and fauna, UNESCO declared Plitvice Lakes a world heritage.
